The Shanghai Zoo is decorated with animal and flower landscapes.

The Shanghai Zoo will host a variety of fun activities, such as exhibitions and folk cultural experiences, for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.

Just ahead of the Year of the Rat, the zoo says it has about 2,300 varieties of rodents, including rats.

Some animals with Chinese names containing the character shu (meaning rat or mouse) are greeting visitors at the zoo, and they include nutria, guinea pig, squirrel monkeys and kangaroo.

A science exhibition about rodent species has also kicked off at the zoo, and visitors are invited to explore Chinese zodiac culture at the zoo's science education pavilion to win gifts.

Folk culture activities and games related to the Year of the Rat, such as jigsaw puzzles, paper-cutting, paper- folding, fashion shows and riddle guessing will be part of the celebration.

The zoo has been spruced up with flowers and Chinese zodiac-themed landscapes for the holiday running from Friday to January 30.

Some activities will run through April 5.
