Light smog, then spring weather

2019-03-12

There will be morning fog and light smog again on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 19 degrees Celsius.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said most of the city's outskirts were covered by thick fog early Monday morning, with a yellow heavy fog alert issued at midnight upgraded to orange — the second-highest level.

The visibility in Chongming, Baoshan, Jiading, Songjiang, Qingpu, Minhang districts and the Pudong New Area was cut to less than 100 meters. The alert was lifted at 8:32am.

Strong winds in the afternoon will clear the smog. The temperature will drop 3 degrees on Wednesday.

Some drizzle will fall between Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Skies will clear on Thursday afternoon with the temperature at 12 degrees.

Friday and Saturday will both be partly sunny.

This year's meteorological spring, which will be official after five days with daily average temperatures recorded at no less than 10 degrees, is likely to come earlier than normal.

Based on the weather bureau's data, generally the city entered spring on March 17.

The earliest spring was recorded on February 9, 2016, while the latest fell on April 25, 1925.

Since the average temperatures over the past three days were all above 10 degrees, it's very likely the bureau will announce the arrival of spring on Wednesday, with Saturday the first day of spring.
