World’s first CHELAE opened

The welcome mat is now out on the world’s first CHELAE which opened its doors in Shanghai’s Fengshengli on October 11, 2017. CHELAE is a chic seafood restaurant that cooks crab-centric dishes. Its name, which in French means “crab”, ties in well with the venue’s penchant for Mediterranean foods.

The minimalist and unique interior decor of the restaurant is the brainchild of EMBT, an architectural design company of international renown founded by Spanish architect Enric Miralles. Its floor is paved with 1440 tiles, among which the colored ones represent schools of fish filing into the restaurant from its entrance.

The restaurant divides into 2 sections. One section is the foyer where an open kitchen allows diners a grandstand view of the tricks of the trade, while the other section is a spacious area with sofas, tables and chairs. A private room for 6-8 people is available.

CHELAE specializes in Spanish fare, but also draws upon the elements of Spain’s neighboring culinary regions like France and Italy. King crabs from Alaska and the Australian beef roasted with the charcoal are its signature creations. In addition to its seafood and meats, CHELAE’s desserts could also make mouths water. Its afternoon tea for two people has two options: sweet and salty.
