Shanghai Natural History Museum has more than 290,000 items in collection, including natural and human relics from East China, China and other parts of the world, respectively in five categories: plants, animals, paleontology, geology and humanities. There are more than 150,000 plant specimens, more than 4,000 mammal specimens, more than 10,000 fish specimens, more than 10,000 bird specimens, more than 10,000 amphibian specimens and more than 10,000 reptile specimens, nearly 33,000 insect specimens, more than 50,000 other invertebrate specimens, more than 5,000 geological specimens, more than 8,000 paleontological specimens, more than 3,500 folklore items.
