Beijing and Shanghai work together to promote the growth of high-end MICE industry

On April 16, during the China (Shanghai) International Meetings and Conferences Forum 2011 (CIMCF), Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development and Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration signed the "Memorandum of Understanding on the Strategic Cooperation in Promoting the Growth of High-End MICE Industry".

Beijing and Shanghai are China`s two high-end MICE destinations. By playing host to the Olympics and the World Expo, the two cities showed different advantages and characteristics when it comes to the development of high-end MICE sector. After years of practice, the two cities have gained valuable and extensive experiences in bidding for and jointly hosting large conferences of international magnitude, promoting urban MICE resources and publicizing the emerging high-end MICE destinations. As MICE businesses in Beijing and Shanghai have a lot of activities covering different geographic areas, they need coordination and support from the government. As infrastructure in the sectors of aviation and railway improves and large tourism projects make headway, Beijing and Shanghai have exciting prospects for working together.

The tourism regulators of Beijing and Shanghai will have in place a system of high-level reciprocal visits and establish a joint working group in order to keep a finger on the pulse of the latest development of tourism of the two cities, draw upon each other`s experiences, establish the direction for strategic cooperation, go about the daily routine, make the most of each other`s advantages, and forge an extensive industry alliance incorporating neighboring provinces and cities, businesses, venues and airlines.

In the years to come, Beijing and Shanghai will
- jointly bid for or support the other in bidding for large international events like SITE and ICCA annual conferences,
- get involved in such high-end MICE events as CIBTM and IT&CM that the other play host to,
- work together to facilitate the operations of high-end MICE organizations like SITE and ICCA,
- fully utilize the synergies that will rise from the partnership and integrate the government and industry resources for international marketing initiatives to publicize China`s image as a high-end MICE destination and related products;
- do market research, prepare statistics, come up with appropriate support policies and offer certification services, and
- jointly support businesses in working together on high-end MICE projects across regions.
The "Memorandum of Understanding on the Strategic Cooperation in Jointly Promoting the Growth of High-End MICE Industry" opens new prospects for cooperation between the tourism sectors of Beijing and Shanghai. It paves the way for the implementation of the MICE growth strategies of the two cities and marks a new starting point for moving forward. It represents a new line of thinking and sets an exemplary model for inter-regional cooperation.
