China Pavilion is located at the crossing of two horizontal and vertical axes in the Pudong part of the Expo site.

With an estimated cost of 1.5 billion Yuan, China Pavilion’s design features a traditional style red architecture called "oriental crown". The construction scheme for the China Pavilion contains rich elements of Chinese culture and could well display Chinese wisdom. It also has international features, modernity and could serve as a symbol. It helps develop the theme of the 2010 Expo.

The oriental crown, standing 63 meters in height, uses traditional dougong brackets and features wooden brackets fixed layer upon layer between the top of a column and a crossbeam.

As a permanent landmark in the inner part of Pudong New Area, the structure will adopt ecological sound technologies and energy-saving measures. These include the sun-shading design, exterior of the domestic pavilion is a buffer zone for heat or cold, as well as ecological landscaping on the roof could lower energy demands effectively.

During the Expo, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of "Chinese wisdom in urban development" by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. The domestic hall will provide provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions and other areas a platform to display their urban achievements.

The Theme Pavilion is one of the major permanent Expo structures. After the event ends, it will be turned into an exhibition center and become part of a new commercial heart of the city that will include the China Pavilion, the Expo Center and the Performance Center.

The pavilion will showcase the theme of the six-month Shanghai Expo – “Better City, Better Life”. Exhibitions in the pavilion will showcase innovative urban living and offer creative solutions to urban problems.

The energy-efficient Theme Pavilion costs about 1.3 billion yuan (US$190 million) and will cover 80,000 square meters above ground, and another 40,000 square meters underground. Exhibitions will spread over 70,000 square meters. The major exhibition hall covers 30,000 square meters and the other two halls are big enough to accommodate four large passenger aircrafts.

The pavilion's roof will be covered with energy-producing solar panels. The windows are like those of an old Shanghai residence. Not only do they add a local flavor but they easily collect light. Plants on the walls help to maintain comfortable levels for temperature and humidity. A 30,000 sqm solar board will be installed on the roof to provide enormous amounts of electrical power.

The Theme Pavilion will be Shanghai's second-largest exhibition hall, after the Shanghai New International Expo Center in Pudong, which has 100,000 square meters of exhibition space.

The Theme Pavilion will exemplify the relationship between cities, human beings and the Earth.

Expo Center, Expo Permanent Structures Pavilions
top •

The Expo Center is one of the most important places for the Expo. It demonstrates three major principles -- integrated function, solemn style, energy efficiency & environment friendliness. These are closely related to the theme of the World Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Optimized elevation design provides functional spaces of the building with the best views. It is a "truly" scenic building in all dimensions. Guests and participants may have a bird’s-eye view of the beautiful river during a short break. The Banquet hall and dining hall, directly linked with a large sightseeing terrace and roof garden, are located on the highest level of the center area.

It will serve as the operating & commanding center, ceremony & conference center, information & press center, and forum & activity center during the Expo.

The Expo Center accommodates the 2,600-seat conference hall, 600-seat international conference hall, 5,000-seat multi-functional hall, and 3,000-seat banquet hall.

"Green, energy efficient, environment friendliness" is a constant philosophy in the designing of the Expo Center. It will become a "truly" green construction by incorporating effective means of energy control, water consumption control, indoor air quality control and utilization of renewable materials. The Expo Center is designed as an all steel-frame building. This can speed up the construction and minimize energy consumption as well as pollutants and impacts to perimeter areas.

Commencement of construction: June 7, 2009
Expected completion time: October, 2009
