13 ancient lamps tell the history of lanterns

As the first lantern cultural art exhibition in Shanghai, the "More Than Lanterns" exhibition ingeniously focuses on lanterns, lantern festivals, and lantern art as the core clues, telling the story from multiple dimensions such as historical sedimentation, folk customs, skill inheritance, and emotional connections, leading the audience on an immersive journey through time and space.

Starting with the lantern as the narrative starting point, the "More Than Lanterns" exhibition carefully selects and showcases 13 precious ancient lamp artifacts, narrating the historical changes of Chinese lantern art.

The 13 ancient lamps on display in this exhibition are all from the Jinshan Museum, including many treasures from the museum's collection that are being publicly displayed for the first time.

The exhibition has carefully selected representative lamps from six key historical periods: Pre-Qin and Han Dynasties, Three Kingdoms and Two Jin Dynasties, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang Dynasties, Song, Jin, and Yuan Dynasties, as well as the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Each ancient lamp deeply reflects the unique historical features of its respective era.

"Xiaoxiaochang New Year Paintings" Reproduce the Folk Customs of Haipai

To celebrate the first "intangible cultural heritage" edition of the Spring Festival, the "Beyond Lanterns" exhibition will invite 10 exquisite "Xiaoxiaochang New Year prints" from the collection of the Shanghai Library to the exhibition hall. Through the use of advanced modern light and shadow technology, these old prints will be given a new lease of life.

The ten "Xiaoxiaochang New Year prints" were created during the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period, featuring works such as "Grand Dragon Lantern Festival," "Abundant Silkworm Flowers and Five Grains Harvest," "Yuyuan Acrobatics," "Chinese and Foreign Trade Celebrate with Grand Flower Lanterns," etc. These exquisite prints vividly depict the customs and scenes of the New Year period in the old city area of Shanghai with Yuyuan as the core: from the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month to the eighteenth day of the first lunar month, the people of old Shanghai celebrate each day of the Spring Festival in a particularly fulfilling manner. The interesting New Year customs contain profound cultural heritage and rich local characteristics.

The immersive spatial atmosphere combined with lively and interactive experiences will make visitors feel as if they are traveling through a tunnel of time, experiencing the traditional Spring Festival of old Shanghai residents firsthand.
